MN31: Cūḷagosiṅgasutta
The Shorter Discourse at Gosinga
Presented: March 25, 2026
Location: Philadelphia Buddhist Association
Overview
The Cūḷagosiṅga Sutta presents a vivid model of communal harmony, disciplined practice, and the refinement of the mind through meditative absorption. In this study, the Buddha's encounter with three monks living in deep concord becomes a practical teaching on how spiritual friendship supports both daily life and profound meditation.
The talk highlights themes of gratitude for good companions, intentional kindness, noble silence, shared purpose, and the importance of joy in meditation. It also connects the sutta's teachings to family life, workplaces, and modern community.
Key Themes
Highlights from the Study
Harmony in practice: The monks are described as living together “like milk and water,” regarding one another with kindly eyes.
The engine of harmony: Gratitude, restraint, and the willingness to set aside personal preference for the good of the group.
Structure matters: Silent cooperation, shared routines, and regular discussion of the teachings help reduce friction.
Meditation and joy: The study emphasizes that joy and peaceful abiding support steadiness of mind and deepen practice.
Guided Reflection
Reflect on one or two ideas from the sutta that stand out to you. Begin with the breath, return gently when distracted, and allow a sense of warmth, peace, and calm happiness to grow naturally.
- Begin with the breath and observe long or short breaths.
- If thoughts arise, gently label them as thinking and return to the breath.
- When calm, reflect on the peaceful quality of the mind.
- Gently smile and allow warmth and happiness to spread through the body.
- Let the brighter feeling soften into a calmer, steadier happiness.
